Fine and Performing Arts

For my 24-hour Fine and Performing Arts concentration, I was to meet with an advisor at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts to determine a capstone project. After some discussion it was decided that I would write 10 student profiles, from various majors within the college. My advisor chose which students she would like me to profile and asked me to take photos as well. This was my first experience to take photos to accompany my stories. It added a whole new level of excitement.

Though all of my students profiles were posted on the Hixson-Lied College’s website, one profile in particular was features in UNL’s Arts Magazine. The story is about Ben Adams who is a film and new media major in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. In between classes and during his free time, he films music videos for the band The Lonely Biscuits.

Emily Martinez was a senior when I interviewed her. She was involved in almost everything the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film had to offer. She was the leading actress in a school production and the supporting actress in another. Martinez even wrote her own play that was featured in Theatrix’s (student-run theatre company at UNL) annual New Artist Festival. Martinez will also be attending a very prestigious acting school in fall 2014. And even though her schedule was packed and  busier than mine could ever be, she was still eager to talk with me and willing to talk about what ever I asked. With Martinez being involved in so many activities, it also taught me how to break a story into sections so a reader doesn’t experience an information overload.
